Hoërskool Generaal Hertzog learner Given Nkonyane, who goes by the stage name Sgvo, says that he started his music career just as a hobby back in 2016.

He says that his inspirations for going into the music scene mostly came from his admiration of deep house music, he however explains that he did not always share any resonance with deep house music until his close friends convinced him otherwise.

Sgvo says that had it not been for his personal passion, which fuelled him to enter the industry and present something different to the scene, he would not have put in any real effort in getting into the industry.

Sgvo believes that had he not gone into music, he would have made his personal attempt in professional sports as a soccer player.

He features on the ninth volume of The Mzansi House album, an album comprising of compilations from various house artists which has topped the iTunes charts in South Africa since its release.

On the album, Sgvo has a song titled ‘For You’ that he has since dedicated to his late sister Gracious Nkonyane who passed away in a vehicle accident earlier this year.

Sgvo expresses that he has experienced a large number of challenges in the industry, however he says that the most discouraging of these challenges is when he faced rejection from his counterparts.

Sgvo expresses that this nearly made him give up on his dream but in his despair, he managed to motivate himself and remind himself of the reasons why he initially entered the industry.

Sgvo says that he recently had a performance that, for him, acted as a learning experience more than anything else; he says that this motivated him to devise ways in which he could master his craft.

Sgvo says that he believes in himself and his talents, he also believes that what sets him apart from other artists in the industry is his humble nature.

He advises people who want to enter the industry to do so only if they are passionate about the industry, “there are things that will happen that will often discourage you and in such situations, only passion will fuel you.”
